The New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA) has announced a series of events throughout September to observe Recovery Awareness Month. These events aim to support individuals in recovery and those who assist them. Secretary Kari Armijo of the HCA said, "In September and every day, we honor the courage of those in recovery and the dedication of the providers, peers, and advocates who support them." The initiative is designed to promote healing, reduce stigma, and enhance access to behavioral health services across New Mexico.
Residents are encouraged to participate in various activities such as community resource fairs, storytelling circles focused on recovery, educational workshops on trauma-informed care, harm reduction strategies, culturally responsive recovery pathways, and recognition ceremonies. Detailed information about these events can be found at nmpeercoalition.org.
This year's theme is "Recovery is for Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community," emphasizing New Mexico's dedication to equity and inclusion. The state collaborates with tribal partners, local governments, nonprofit organizations, and individuals with lived experience to foster hope. Nick Boukas, director of the Behavioral Health Services Division at HCA, remarked that "Recovery is a journey of resilience, and no one walks it alone."
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared September 2025 as "National Recovery Month" in New Mexico. She encourages residents to engage in activities that promote prevention efforts and celebrate recovery while supporting mental health wellness.
