New Mexico Environment Department highlights methane regulation efforts amid ongoing enforcement actions

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) has reported progress in its Enforcement Watch initiative, which aims to provide transparency by sharing information on enforcement actions related to environmental protection, public health, and worker safety. The program was launched in May 2023 and updates the public monthly on both active and resolved enforcement matters.

Active matters involve alleged violations under investigation or awaiting resolution, while resolved matters include cases settled in court or administratively, with any civil penalties paid. In August 2025, NMED initiated 223 enforcement actions and resolved 56.

This month, the focus is on methane regulation through the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS). In collaboration with the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD), NMED is working to implement extensive methane emission rules. These efforts align with Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s executive order aimed at significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change by trapping heat in the atmosphere.

In other news related to NMED's activities, it has been confirmed that Las Vegas drinking water remains safe despite concerns about post-fire runoff from the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fire. The situation has been closely monitored by both city officials and NMED. More details can be found here.
