The Public Safety Bold Issue Group (BIG) recently convened to discuss public safety initiatives with key figures, including Dan Schlegel, chief of staff for Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Kyle Hartsock, former Albuquerque Police Department commander. The meeting was led by Janice Torrez, president of Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico, with Andres Garcia of Capra Bank New Mexico as vice chair.

During the session, Schlegel outlined potential topics for an upcoming special legislative session expected in September or October. These include revising "harm to self and others" definitions to improve mental health crisis management and addressing healthcare infrastructure needs. He highlighted the administration's focus on enhancing Medicaid programs through targeted appropriations and increasing funding for rural healthcare systems.

Hartsock provided insights into local law enforcement challenges, particularly along Southeast Central Avenue, known for high criminal activity. He discussed issues such as drug possession enforcement and the impact of repeat offenders on community safety. Gun violence remains a significant concern affecting business confidence and economic development.

Torrez emphasized the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce's commitment to addressing public safety issues impacting businesses and residents. She shared a personal experience with a home invasion to illustrate the seriousness of crime in the community. "Crime can happen to anyone," she noted, underscoring her dedication to finding solutions.

Peter Lorenz, chairman of the Chamber's board, expressed determination to enhance advocacy efforts and achieve meaningful results for the community.
