Silver City Public Library has announced an open position for a Children’s and Young Adult Librarian. The role will focus on planning and managing the library’s collection, programs, and services for children and teens. The librarian will also act as a representative to families, schools, and organizations that serve youth.
The annual salary range for the position is $29,120 to $39,429.
Applicants must have at least a high school diploma or GED certificate, a valid New Mexico driver’s license, and a bachelor’s degree. Candidates should have at least one year of experience working with children or young adults, ideally in a public or school library setting. Familiarity with children’s or young adult literature is also preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and training may be considered.
Key responsibilities include developing and conducting programs for children and young adults such as story times, craft activities, Makerspace sessions with STEM kits, and gaming events using Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles. The librarian will maintain both the Children’s Room and the newly created Young Adult Room.
Outreach to local schools, daycares, preschools, and community organizations serving youth is part of the job duties. The librarian will also serve as a liaison to these agencies.
Additional tasks involve providing reference services to children, teens, students, teachers, and caregivers; creating marketing materials; promoting resources through social media; maintaining collections within budget limits; helping develop policies related to collections; supervising volunteers; preparing reports; assisting at public service desks—especially with technology questions—and other assigned duties.
