Incumbent Mayor Tim Keller is the only candidate in Albuquerque's current mayoral race to receive public campaign funding, according to recent developments. The Rio Grande Foundation (RGF) has raised concerns about the fairness and effectiveness of the city's public campaign financing system.
Paul J. Gessing, president of RGF, recently spoke with KOAT Channel 7 to address these concerns. He criticized the process, stating: "What do you call a public financing for a mayor’s race with 7 candidates but the ONLY candidate to get taxpayer dollars to run their campaign is the incumbent who is also looking for a 3rd term? Some terms that come to mind are 'failed,' 'corrupt,' and 'anti-democratic.'"
Gessing also discussed how publicly-financed candidates like Keller may "double dip," receiving both taxpayer funds and additional support, which he argues undermines trust in the system.
The issue highlights ongoing debates about Albuquerque’s approach to campaign finance reform and whether it ensures fair competition among all candidates seeking office.
