Jay Block, a senator from New Mexico, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the Ukraine invasion would not have occurred under former President Donald Trump. Block criticized President Joe Biden's leadership in this context. The statement was made on the social media platform X.
"HUGE! Putin admits he would never have invaded Ukraine if Trump was president," said Jay C Block, New Mexico State Senator from 12th District (R). "Biden was weak and pathetic, especially after Afghanistan. When you show weakness, our enemies/competitors smell blood in the water and they will act. Trump is strong. Biden was weak and asleep."
According to the New York Post, in August 2025, Putin echoed Trump's claim that the Ukraine war "would never have started" if Trump had been president, saying, "I can confirm that." These remarks were made during a summit in Alaska between Trump and Putin. The meeting concluded without a ceasefire and highlighted Moscow's efforts to support Trump's narrative while challenging U.S. policy.
Russia has continued its territorial gains in Ukraine, capturing approximately 25 square miles between August 12 and 19, 2025. This is compared to 76 square miles seized the previous week. Since mid-July, Russia has captured around 237 square miles, indicating steady but fluctuating advances along the front lines, as reported by Russia Matters.
Under President Biden's administration, the United States committed more than $113 billion in aid to Ukraine starting in 2022 and later requested an additional $61.4 billion. This reflects strong support for Kyiv’s defense. In contrast, Trump's August 2025 summit with Putin focused on negotiating a settlement and even suggested territorial concessions. This signals a shift from direct military support to diplomacy, according to The Washington Post.
