ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce is seeking volunteers for its Albuquerque Reads program, which provides literacy tutoring to kindergarten and first-grade students at three Title I elementary schools: Whittier, Atrisco, and Bel-Air. The program delivers 90 minutes each week of personalized literacy support to participating students from September through May. Each student in the program also receives up to 20 books for their home library.

Albuquerque Reads is a classroom-based initiative designed to help young readers improve their literacy skills during the early years of education. According to the Chamber, "Albuquerque Reads tutors deliver 90 minutes each week of personalized literacy tutoring for each kindergarten-first-grade Title I student in the program and supplies every student it serves with up to 20 books for their at-home library. Albuquerque Reads is a classroom-based tutoring program that helps struggling kindergarten and first-grade readers boost their literacy achievement to enable lifelong learning."

The Chamber highlights the importance of early reading development, stating, "Did you know that from kindergarten to grade two, children Learn to Read? From grade three on, children Read to Learn." The organization encourages community members to participate alongside Albuquerque Public Schools and other volunteers.

Tutoring requires a commitment of 90 minutes per week. Volunteers may also form teams with friends or colleagues and tutor once a month instead. In addition to in-person sessions, students have access to online reading resources for use at home.

Several training opportunities are scheduled for prospective tutors at the participating schools:

- Sep. 2 – 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

- Sep. 3 – 12 p.m.–3 p.m.
