Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández addresses Medicare cuts and local outreach efforts

Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, a U.S. Congresswoman from New Mexico, has recently used her social media platform to inform constituents about opportunities for youth, warn about potential Medicare cuts, and highlight community engagement with Latino leaders.

On August 17, 2025, Leger Fernández invited young people interested in military service to join an informational event: "Are you interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy? Register for my virtual Q&A on September 4th to learn about the nomination process. You can register here: https://t.co/25cAdKL29V".

The following day, she raised concerns over proposed changes to Medicare. On August 18, 2025, she posted: "HUGE: A new non-partisan report says new changes to Medicare will force cuts of $500 billion. These cuts will devastate seniors who won’t be able to get the care they need thanks to Trump’s Big, Ugly Bill."

Leger Fernández also highlighted her participation at a local town hall meeting in Española. On August 19, 2025, she wrote: "On Friday, I joined the LULAC Town Hall in Española with Latino leaders, workers, and families who fight every day for dignity and opportunity. Since 1929, LULAC has stood with our community — and today, as we face new attacks, we are not powerless. Latinos were not included in https://t.co/oztsnAATPt".

Leger Fernández has maintained a visible presence both online and within her district since first winning election in 2020 against Alexis Martinez Johnson by a margin of nearly 60 percent of the vote. She continued this record with victories over Martinez Johnson again in 2022 and Sharon Clahchischilliage in the 2024 general election.

LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens), referenced by Leger Fernández during her recent town hall appearance, is one of the oldest Hispanic civil rights organizations in the United States and has been active since its founding in 1929.
