New Mexico Environment Department highlights air quality efforts in July enforcement update

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) continues to promote its Enforcement Watch initiative, which aims to provide the public with regular updates on enforcement actions related to environmental protection, public health, and worker safety. The program, launched in May 2023, is designed to enhance transparency by making enforcement data readily available.

Enforcement Watch categorizes updates into two main areas: active matters and resolved matters. Active matters involve alleged violations of state regulations that are still under investigation or awaiting resolution. Resolved matters include cases that have been settled either in court or administratively, with any civil penalties fully paid.

In July 2025, NMED initiated 137 enforcement actions and resolved 59 cases. This month’s spotlight is on the Air Quality Bureau, which focuses on protecting air quality by monitoring health risks and enforcing pollution controls through permits. Since July 2024, the bureau has issued six Administrative Compliance Orders amounting to over $90 million and eight settlement agreements totaling more than $26 million. These actions address facilities responsible for releasing 821,964 pounds of excess emissions.

"NMED’s commitment to New Mexico residents for accountability and regulatory compliance statewide" remains a priority as highlighted by the department's ongoing efforts.
