The Downtown Transformation Bold Issues Group (BIG) held its first meeting of the program year on August 7, providing updates on several projects aimed at revitalizing the Downtown area. The initiative is led by Doug Majewski, with Tom Briones serving as vice chair.

William Keleher from the Business Improvement District (BID) shared an update on the BID's role in the transformation strategy. He highlighted efforts to secure property owner support necessary for petitioning the City Council for implementation approval.

Terry Brunner, director of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency, discussed progress on The Rail Trail project. This infrastructure component is crucial for improving connectivity and recreational opportunities in Downtown. The Sawmill Rail Trail section has reached full design completion and construction is ahead of schedule, with Jaynes Corporation leading the effort. Brunner plans to seek development funding from the state Legislature, with backing from the Chamber. The Rail Trail will span 7 miles, with funding secured for 2 miles so far.

Brunner also updated attendees on the Tax Increment Financing (TIFF) initiative, which is under review by New Mexico's Tax and Revenue Department. The TIFF aims to attract capital investment to Downtown. Brunner noted previous successes with TIDDs in Mesa Del Sol and Uptown as examples of how such initiatives can improve Albuquerque’s metropolitan landscape.

The meeting marked significant progress in Downtown development efforts, with advocacy work continuing until their next meeting in a few months.
