Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández criticizes GOP-backed federal worker policies and budget cuts

U.S. Representative Teresa Leger Fernández has voiced strong criticism of recent Republican-backed federal actions and proposed budget cuts, particularly highlighting their impact on veterans and essential programs in New Mexico.

On August 7, 2025, Leger Fernández posted: "The Trump administration just stripped nearly 400,000 VA workers of their union rights—including 120,00 veterans who work for the VA. This is a ruthless attack on the people who care for those who served. It’s anti-worker, anti-veteran, and anti-American. Trump and Republicans".

The following day, she addressed additional concerns about proposed federal budget reductions: "Donald Trump and Republicans’ Big, Ugly bill and other cuts will gut the federal programs our families count on — and in New Mexico, that means almost everything. Here’s what the @nytimes found in their investigation.".

In a subsequent post on August 8, Leger Fernández elaborated on the potential consequences of these cuts: "Health care. Food assistance. Public lands. Wildfire readiness. The arts. These cuts strike at the heart of what makes our state the Land of Enchantment."

Leger Fernández has been a prominent figure in New Mexico politics, securing her seat in Congress through several election cycles. In 2024, she won against Sharon Clahchischilliage with 41.8% of the vote compared to her opponent's 43.7%. She previously defeated Alexis Martinez Johnson in both the 2022 and 2020 general elections with more than half of the votes each time.

Her statements come amid ongoing national debates about federal spending priorities and labor rights for government employees.
