The New Mexico Public Education Department has scheduled a series of community meetings throughout August to discuss the Martinez/Yazzie Action Plan. The plan is a response to a court ruling that found the state did not meet its constitutional duty to provide adequate education for all students.
Eleven regional meetings will take place across New Mexico, with dates and locations specified. These gatherings aim to engage the community in the planning process, ensuring it reflects the needs of students, families, educators, and tribal communities.
Janelle Garcia from the Public Education Department invites media members to attend these events. Reporters should RSVP at least 24 hours in advance via email. Attendees will have access to food, childcare, and translation services. Participation is flexible; attendees can arrive or leave at any time during the meetings.
The action plan focuses on five areas: high-quality instruction access, culturally responsive educators, academic supports, equitable funding, and data-driven accountability. It is being developed in collaboration with several organizations including the LANL Foundation and WestEd.
Two virtual meetings are also planned for August 22 and August 26. Links for these sessions will be provided later.
