The National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) in Albuquerque has announced a series of events following the opening of its art exhibition, "Voces del Pueblo: Artists of the Levantamiento Chicano in New Mexico." The exhibition, which began on April 25, showcases the work of six artists who were students at New Mexico Highlands University in the early 1970s. These events aim to provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the exhibition and include artist talks, workshops, and musical performances throughout 2025.

Jadira Gurulé, NHCC Head Curator and Visual Arts Program Manager, said, "We are excited to work collaboratively with the exhibition curators, artists whose work is featured in the exhibition, and scholars to provide opportunities for the public to learn more about this important history while also getting to know the artists and their incredible stories better."

The first event is scheduled for Sunday, August 3. It will feature a gallery tour and musical performance by artist Francisco Lefebre from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Additional events are planned for September through November. Highlights include an art workshop led by guest artist Roberta Marquez on September 4 and a lecture by Julianna Loera-Wiggins on September 25 about the Early Chicano Movement at New Mexico Highlands University.

In October, Juanita J. Lavadie and Ignacio "Nacho" Jaramillo will participate in another Plática Pública event on October 5. An evening of music hosted by Lefebre and Chuy Martinez is set for October 17. November will feature discussions on mural creation moderated by co-curator Irene Vásquez on November 6 at the Albuquerque Museum and a lecture on Chicana feminism led by Bernadine Hernández later that month.

The final Plática Pública will occur on December 7 with artists Roberta Márquez and Adelita M. Medina. All events are free and primarily held at NHCC's Visual Art Museum unless noted otherwise.

The NHCC is committed to preserving Hispanic culture through various programs and partnerships throughout its extensive campus facilities.
