Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) is now in effect for residents of Bernalillo County, New Mexico. According to County Clerk Michelle S. Kavanaugh, as of July 1, U.S. citizens who are New Mexico residents and at least 18 years old will be automatically registered to vote when they apply for or renew a driver's license or state ID at the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), unless they opt out.

"This empowers more people to participate in our elections—and that’s something to celebrate," Kavanaugh said.

After visiting the MVD, residents will receive a notice from the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office confirming their registration. The notice will provide information on how to request a mail-in ballot, update political party affiliation, or opt out of voter registration if desired. If the notice is not returned, voter registration will remain active. Updates can also be made anytime at NMVote.org.
