Equality New Mexico (EQNM) is encouraging supporters to consider including the organization in their estate plans as part of Make a Will Month this August. The initiative highlights legacy giving, also known as planned giving or bequests, as a way for individuals to continue supporting LGBTQ advocacy beyond their lifetimes.
Legacy gifts can take several forms, such as specifying a dollar amount, designating a percentage of an estate, or making another gesture that aligns with personal values. Gauge Burnett, EQNM’s Development & Engagement Strategist, stated: “Some people wonder how much to leave as a legacy gift. We always say that if it’s meaningful to you, then it’s meaningful to EQNM. We give with our hearts.”
EQNM emphasizes that legacy gifts are not solely acts of charity but also ways for queer and trans individuals to build intergenerational wealth and support chosen family structures. Such contributions provide financial stability for organizations like EQNM, allowing them to pursue long-term strategies and demonstrate sustainability to institutional funders.
The organization has partnered with FreeWill, an online platform that enables users to create legal wills at no cost. Through FreeWill, individuals can write a will in about 20 minutes and have the option to include EQNM as a beneficiary. Supporters based in New Mexico will receive prompts within the tool regarding the opportunity to support EQNM.
Donors who choose to make legacy gifts may be acknowledged by EQNM according to their preferences or remain anonymous. The organization expressed gratitude for all donors who contribute toward advancing equality and safety for LGBTQ New Mexicans through both immediate and long-term support.
