The New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary is hosting an exhibition titled "Lucy R. Lippard: Notes from the Radical Whirlwind," celebrating the influential writer, activist, and curator Lucy R. Lippard. The exhibition highlights Lippard's significant impact on contemporary art and cultural activism over the past six decades.
The display includes over 500 artworks, artist books, political posters, and ephemera contributed by artists and collaborators who have been part of Lippard's journey. It spans two galleries and traces her evolution from a curator and critic to a prominent voice in feminist and activist art. The exhibition also explores her collaborations with renowned artists like Sol LeWitt and Robert Ryman, as well as her involvement with organizations such as Printed Matter, the Art Workers’ Coalition, and the Heresies Collective.
"Lucy Lippard didn’t just write about revolutions in art, she helped start them," said Alexandra Terry, Curator of Contemporary Art. "Her life’s work reminds us that culture and activism are deeply intertwined, and that art can be a catalyst for meaningful transformation."
Lippard's connection to New Mexico is also featured in the exhibition, reflecting her interest in the region's history and archaeological sites. This presentation builds on the national touring exhibition "Sniper’s Nest: Art That Has Lived with Lucy Lippard" from 1999.
The exhibition will run from October 10, 2025, through August 9, 2026.
The New Mexico Museum of Art is part of the Department of Cultural Affairs. Supported by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and its donors, it aims to create experiences that enhance understanding and enjoyment of art across New Mexico.
