The National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has announced a series of events to accompany its art exhibition "Voces del Pueblo: Artists of the Levantamiento Chicano in New Mexico." Open since April 25, the exhibition features works by six artists who were students at New Mexico Highlands University in the early 1970s. These artworks highlight the Chicana and Chicano experience in New Mexico.
Jadira Gurulé, NHCC Head Curator and Visual Arts Program Manager, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with curators, artists, and scholars to deepen public understanding of this history. The exhibition is guest-curated by Ray Hernández-Durán, Ph.D., and Irene Vásquez, Ph.D.
The event series begins on August 3 with Pláticas Públicas, where visitors can explore the exhibition alongside featured artist Francisco Lefebre. Additional programs will occur through November, including workshops and musical performances.
In September, Roberta Marquez will participate in Happy Arte Hour on September 4. A lecture by Julianna Loera-Wiggins on September 25 will delve into the Early Chicano Movement's history at NMHU. October's events include a Plática Pública with artists Juanita J. Lavadie and Ignacio "Nacho" Jaramillo on October 5 and an offsite music event hosted by Lefebre and Chuy Martinez on October 17.
November features talks on mural creation moderated by co-curator Irene Vásquez at the Albuquerque Museum on November 6. A lecture led by Bernadine Hernández will discuss Chicana feminism and art in New Mexico later that month.
The final Plática Pública of the year will be held on December 7 with artists Roberta Márquez and Adelita M. Medina. All events are free and primarily located at the NHCC Visual Art Museum unless noted otherwise.
