El Palacio magazine has been recognized with a national award from the National Federation of Press Women. The magazine's editor, Emily Withnall, secured third place for editing a single page in the article "Jean Toomer’s Search for Identity in Taos" by Darryl Lorenzo Wellington, featured in the Spring 2024 issue. This accolade was part of the organization’s Professional Communications Contest.
Earlier this year, El Palacio also received six awards from the New Mexico Press Women. These included first-place honors for Editing for Print or Online Publications and Magazine/Magapaper for the same article edited by Withnall, as well as Single Photography on any Subject for "Sand & Stone" by Cara Romero.
"I am honored by the recognition of my editing and credit the article’s writer, Darryl Lorenzo Wellington, for the award as well. It’s a pleasure to edit work by writers as stellar as Wellington," said Withnall. She expressed gratitude to NFPW for their role in promoting quality communications nationwide.
The National Federation of Press Women holds an annual contest covering various print and broadcast communication categories such as writing, editing, and photography. Following its success at the state level, El Palacio submitted its winning entries to this national competition. The third-place win was announced this month, with awards to be presented at the National Communications Conference Award Banquet in Colorado in September.
El Palacio is published by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and has been in circulation since 1913. It focuses on art, culture, and history of the Southwest, highlighting exhibitions and programs from New Mexico's museums and cultural institutions.
