County Clerk Michelle S. Kavanaugh has announced that Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) is now active in Bernalillo County and throughout New Mexico. As of July 1, residents who are U.S. citizens, New Mexico residents, and at least 18 years old will be automatically registered to vote when they apply for or renew a driver's license or state ID at the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), unless they choose to opt out.
"This empowers more people to participate in our elections—and that's something to celebrate," says Kavanaugh.
Following an MVD visit, residents will receive a notice from the Bernalillo County Clerk's Office confirming their registration. The notice will also provide information on how to request a mail-in ballot, update political party affiliation, or opt out of voter registration if desired.
If the notice is not returned, voter registration remains active. Updates can be made anytime at NMVote.org.
