Tribal leaders from various Nations, Pueblos, and Tribes gathered with Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, cabinet secretaries, and state tribal liaisons at the State Tribal Leaders Summit in Santa Fe on Tuesday. The meeting focused on the potential effects of proposed federal budget cuts to SNAP and Medicaid. Economic development and funding for tribal infrastructure were also discussed.
Governor Lujan Grisham emphasized the importance of these meetings, stating, "These gatherings are critical in addressing the mutual concerns between tribal and state leadership." She expressed her commitment to working with tribal leaders to improve conditions for Native Americans and all New Mexicans.
The summit, established under the State Tribal Collaboration Act in 2009, is organized by the New Mexico Indian Affairs Department. It aims to ensure that tribal priorities are considered in state policy decisions. According to Indian Affairs Department Secretary Josett D. Monette, "Under Gov. Lujan Grisham’s administration, there has been unparalleled support and investment in the Nations, Pueblos, Tribes and tribal communities in New Mexico."
Monette added that the summit represents a collaborative effort between state and tribal leaders to address ongoing challenges and develop solutions.
