The New Mexico Semi-Quincentennial Commission has launched "NM 1776," a statewide initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This initiative aims to connect this national milestone with New Mexico's history, exploring democratic principles through a local perspective.
Established by Senate Bill 106 of the 56th Legislature, the Commission is tasked with planning and promoting events across New Mexico. It seeks collaboration with various partners to organize educational, cultural, and community activities.
"Our vision for NM 1776 is to bring context and color to the founding of the United States by putting it in conversation with New Mexico at the same historic moment in time," said Debra Garcia y Griego, Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. "We are committed to an inclusive commemoration that reflects New Mexico’s diverse cultures and perspectives, highlighting our state’s profound contributions to the nation’s story."
The commemoration will focus on themes such as historical identity, independence histories, and New Mexico's contributions to U.S. history. These themes will be explored through educational resources, community programs, exhibitions, and public engagement initiatives.
The branding for NM 1776 will reflect New Mexico's unique culture and landscape under the theme "One Land, Many Stories." A dedicated website will provide planning information and resources leading up to July 4, 2026.
The Commission encourages participation from all New Mexicans by visiting nm1776.org for updates and involvement opportunities. The initiative invites ideas from individuals and communities statewide as planning continues.
