Transportation professionals in New Mexico have the opportunity to enhance their skills in public engagement through free virtual training sessions provided by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) this summer. These sessions are designed to help participants navigate the public engagement requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

The training series aims to improve community engagement in transportation projects across the state, focusing on NEPA compliance and best practices. It is targeted at agencies, consultants, and professionals involved in transportation planning, projects, and programs.

Participants will learn about public engagement best practices under NEPA, regulatory requirements and compliance strategies, techniques for meaningful community participation, and methods to reach diverse communities within New Mexico.

The training schedule includes two sessions: one on Thursday, July 17 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and another on Tuesday, August 19 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Each session lasts for 2.5 hours and features interactive elements such as questions and answers and open discussions with NMDOT experts.

The sessions are intended for all professionals looking to improve their public engagement skills, especially those working in transportation, planning, or environmental review.

To register or learn more about NMDOT’s public engagement initiatives, interested individuals can visit www.dot.nm.gov/projects/public-involvement-portal.

This training initiative supports NMDOT’s broader commitment to enhancing public outreach. The department’s Public Involvement Portal offers ongoing resources aimed at helping practitioners develop strategies that effectively engage with the diverse communities of New Mexico.
