The New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD) has reactivated a division to oversee essential programs aimed at empowering residents to age with dignity and independence. The division will manage initiatives such as New MexiCare, the Veterans-Directed Care Program, the Office of Alzheimer’s and Dementia, Care Transitions, and the Kinship Caregiver Pilot Program.

Emily Kaltenbach, ALTSD Cabinet Secretary, stated that this development marks a significant shift in delivering care. "The inclusion of this division marks a pivotal moment in how we deliver care to New Mexicans," she said. "By housing these vital programs under one focused division, we are ensuring that families, caregivers, and individuals living with complex needs have streamlined access to high-quality, person-centered care."

This division is set to expand caregiver support and enhance community-based services across the state. Priorities include continuity of care, caregiver training, and improved access for rural and tribal communities.

Dr. Angelina Flores-Montoya, ALTSD Deputy Cabinet Secretary, emphasized their commitment: “This is about building out a care system where no one falls through the cracks,” she said. “With the launch of this division, we’re not just reorganizing; we are deepening our commitment to serving the full continuum of long-term care needs in New Mexico.”

Legislative investments during the 2025 session facilitated the reactivation of this Long-Term Care Division. More information can be found at aging.nm.gov or by calling 800-432-2080.
