State Sen. Thornton: 'Democrats don't like giving tax breaks to the middle and lower class'

Ant Thornton, a State Senator from New Mexico, has said that Democrats oppose the One Big Beautiful Bill and have never supported tax relief or reducing government spending. She called for their replacement in Congress. The statement was made on the social media platform X.

"How about we start with removing every member of the Democrat Party," said Anthony L. Thornton, New Mexico State Senator from 198th District (R). "Not one of them support the OBBB, mainly because it will give Trump a political win and secondly, Democrats don't like giving tax breaks to the middle and lower class. Show me one case where the Democrats supported any of your DOGE cuts? Democrats NEVER campaign on reducing government spending."

Congressional debate over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB) has been sharply divided along party lines. Republicans emphasize tax cuts and border security, while Democrats criticize major cuts to Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and clean energy programs. According to Reuters, the Senate passed the OBBB with a 51–50 vote on July 1, 2025, with Vice President Vance breaking the tie after heated floor speeches and procedural fights.

Reuters further reports that the final Senate vote on the OBBB was 51–50, with all Republicans in favor except for one absence. All Democrats voted no, and Vice President Vance cast the deciding vote. The House approved the bill with a 218–214 vote, with only two Republicans joining all Democrats in opposition, underlining a highly partisan outcome.

Recent legislative history shows that Democrats occasionally support targeted tax cuts if paired with spending increases. However, according to Wikipedia, the OBBB marks a sharp shift as it passed with zero Democratic support and no major offsetting revenue provisions. Major tax-and-spending bills in prior sessions saw at least 15–30% Democratic crossover, highlighting how the OBBB stands out for its strict party-line split.

Thornton is a Democratic New Mexico State Senator representing District 14 since January 2025. She previously served on the Albuquerque City Council and as a nonprofit leader in education and housing. According to her official Senate biography, Thornton sits on Finance, Education, and Health & Public Affairs committees and advocates for equity in public schools, affordable housing, and Medicaid expansion.
