President Trump's budget bill has passed the House with a narrow margin of 218-214, following Senate amendments. The legislation is now set for the President's signature despite significant opposition and concerns over its impact on New Mexico and low-income families. Key provisions include cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, repeal of Inflation Reduction Act funds, and dismantling of workforce training programs.
Demis Foster, CEO of Conservation Voters New Mexico (CVNM), criticized the bill: “Today, 218 members of Congress showed us that they are choosing to prioritize cruelty over common sense. Many families across the country are looking for respite, resources, and a safety net to survive. Instead, they’re getting the rug pulled out from under them."
Foster emphasized that this legislation would harm marginalized communities such as LGBTQ+, Indigenous peoples, BIPOC individuals, youth, and women. She condemned those who supported the bill despite acknowledging its potential harm due to negotiated benefits for their states or districts.
New Mexico’s Congressional Delegation opposed the bill. Senators Heinrich and Lujan along with Representatives Stansbury, Leger Fernandez, and Vasquez were praised by Foster for their efforts against it: “We are grateful for the unwavering tenacity and fortitude of New Mexico’s Congressional Delegation... Thank you for standing up for New Mexicans.”
Foster called on state leaders to take legislative action in response: “To our state elected and appointed leaders: this legislation now shapes a clear path forward... This is not game over. It’s game on!”
