Today, Deb Haaland, a candidate for New Mexico governor, released a video cautioning residents about the "Big Billionaire Bill." This legislation, supported by President Trump and Congressional Republicans, has already passed the U.S. Senate and is under consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Haaland expressed concern that the bill would severely impact working families in New Mexico while offering substantial tax breaks to wealthy individuals. "This sends a chilling message to all of us: Trump and Republicans in Congress care more about donors and billionaires than working people—people like us," said Haaland. "Right now, we have a serious fight in front of us."
The proposed legislation includes significant cuts to essential programs such as SNAP and Medicaid. Over 200,000 New Mexicans could lose access to SNAP benefits due to these reductions. The bill also threatens Medicaid services relied upon by nearly half of the state's population. Additionally, up to eight rural hospitals may face closure, with potential consequences including higher healthcare premiums, longer wait times, and increased costs for providers, hospitals, and patients.
Haaland stated her commitment to prioritizing New Mexico's interests if elected governor. "As governor, my priority will put New Mexico first, and if anyone comes after our families, I’ll be right there to hold the line and fight for our state," she affirmed.
She also urged residents to contact Representatives Melanie Stansbury, Teresa Leger Fernandez, and Gabe Vasquez to express gratitude for their opposition to the bill.
