New Mexico grants free park access to resident veterans starting July

Starting July 1, New Mexico veterans will have free access to state parks for day use and camping. This initiative follows the signing of House Bill 161 by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, aimed at providing recreational opportunities for veterans in the state.

The New Mexico State Parks Division has collaborated with the Department of Veterans’ Services to implement this benefit. "New Mexico's veterans have served our country with honor, and they deserve tangible support that matches their sacrifice," said Gov. Lujan Grisham. She emphasized that the lifetime pass allows veterans to enjoy New Mexico's natural beauty and outdoor recreation.

NMDVS Secretary Jamison Herrera expressed appreciation for veterans, stating, "This new benefit shows how much we appreciate our veterans." He noted that enjoying state parks offers them a chance to relax and heal.

Veterans interested in obtaining the lifetime pass can contact NMDVS via email or phone for eligibility information and applications. EMNRD Secretary Melanie A. Kenderdine highlighted the significance of this initiative: "Providing veterans the chance to enjoy our parks and campgrounds is a meaningful way to say thanks."

House Bill 161 received bipartisan support, ensuring free access for resident veterans to state-operated parks.
