The New Mexico Indian Affairs Department (IAD) is working to enhance Tribal capacity for tobacco cessation and prevention programs. These initiatives aim to respect the ceremonial uses of tobacco while addressing the negative impacts of commercial tobacco use. The IAD has received funding from the New Mexico Legislature, sourced from the Tobacco Settlement Fund, to support these efforts in Native American communities.
Karmela Martinez, Administrative & Operations Manager at IAD, can be contacted for more information about the Tobacco Cessation & Prevention Grant Program (TCPP).
The department has launched a campaign under the TCPP with the message "Honor Tradition, Not Addiction." This initiative emphasizes that tobacco is a sacred element used in prayer and ceremonies within Native communities, intended for healing rather than harm. The campaign addresses concerns over high rates of commercial tobacco use among Native youth, who are often targeted by such products.
The campaign aims to promote positive imagery and reinforce healthy practices regarding tobacco use in Native communities. Those seeking assistance with quitting can contact 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
