The Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) in New Mexico has initiated a leadership training program aimed at enhancing its workforce and improving services for vulnerable children and families. The department is collaborating with Leadership New Mexico to provide education to over 1,700 staff members across the state.
The initiative, titled "Reigniting Your PASSION — Defining Your WHY: ONE Mission — ONE Department," underscores CYFD’s dedication to change and its core mission of child protection and family support. Secretary Teresa Casados said, "When we invest in our people, we strengthen our ability to protect children and support families. We’re excited to team with Leadership New Mexico as they share their proven methods for transforming organizations and making them more effective."
Diego Espinoza, President of Leadership New Mexico, highlighted the importance of the partnership. "We’ve seen firsthand how investing in frontline workers translates directly to better community outcomes," he said. "CYFD’s commitment to this comprehensive approach demonstrates genuine leadership accountability."
The training began on June 12, 2025, in Albuquerque and includes interactive workshops focusing on several key areas such as discovering personal motivation for service, building supportive team cultures, improving communication across differences, understanding oneself and others, building resilience, and fostering camaraderie.
Rochelle Alvarado, a CYFD Fostering Connections Trainer/Coach shared her perspective: "My ‘why’ is rooted in my lived experience in foster care... At this conference, I’m not just reigniting my passion — I’m re-committing to using my story to build a stronger, more compassionate system for the next generation."
This program aligns with CYFD’s broader goals of improving child placement stability and workforce retention while complying with the Kevin S. settlement agreement. Casados added that Leadership New Mexico’s training provides staff with confidence and resilience necessary for challenging roles.
Leadership New Mexico has been operational since 1995 and has graduated over 1,800 leaders from various communities through its programs.
