Taxation department grants filing extensions for fire-affected taxpayers

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The Taxation and Revenue Department (TRD) in Santa Fe has announced an extension for taxpayers affected by the Trout and Cotton fires. Individuals and businesses with business tax returns due on June 25 and July 25 can now file by September 25. Those with estimated personal or corporate income tax payments due on June 16 have until September 16 to pay.

The extension means no penalties will be imposed for late filings or payments, although state law prevents the waiver of interest. Details on eligibility are available in Bulletin 100.46, found in the publications folder on the Forms & Publications webpage.

Affected taxpayers should notify TRD via letter or email that they qualify for the extension, providing evidence of their status before filing or after receiving a notice with penalties and interest. Form RPD-41096, Extension of Time to File, is also available online.

Emails for expedited processing can be sent to specific addresses depending on the tax type: Personal Income Tax at Trd.TaxReturnHelp@tax.nm.gov, Corporate Income Tax at CIT.TaxReturnHelp@tax.nm.gov, Gross Receipts Tax at GRT.TRDHelp@tax.nm.gov, Withholding Tax at WHT.TRDHelp@tax.nm.gov, Workers Compensation Tax at WKC.TRDHelp@tax.nm.gov, and Special Tax Programs at Other.Taxes@tax.nm.gov. Alternatively, documents may be mailed to P.O. Box 630, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87504-0630.
