State prepares for potential flash floods with strategic deployments

The Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) in Santa Fe is taking proactive measures to address the anticipated flash flooding in New Mexico this week. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has predicted heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods across the state, particularly in burn scar areas.

Swift water rescue teams from Sandoval County, City of Las Cruces, City of Santa Fe, and the New Mexico National Guard are being strategically positioned near communities at risk for burn scar flooding. In addition to these preparations, DHSEM has coordinated the distribution of sandbags to Grant County and Village of Ruidoso. More sandbags are being prepared to meet any additional requests from local emergency managers. Residents seeking sandbags should contact their municipal or county officials for information on pickup locations.

"We’ve all seen how quickly rainfall can become dangerous – especially in burn scar areas – so we are making sure we have the resources in place to rapidly and effectively respond to any potential flash flooding emergencies," stated Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, Adjutant General of the NM National Guard and Interim Cabinet Secretary of DHSEM.

Residents are urged by DSHEM to remain informed about weather conditions, heed emergency alerts, and take necessary precautions against flooding risks. Further flood safety information is available on their website.
