Deb Haaland warns against hospital closures in rural New Mexico

Deb Haaland, a candidate for New Mexico governor, has raised concerns about proposed federal legislation that threatens the closure of 15 rural hospitals in New Mexico. The legislation, referred to by Haaland as the "Big Bad Bill," could lead to a reduction of over $9.2 billion in funding for rural healthcare facilities while offering tax breaks to wealthier Americans. This information comes from a report by the Urban Institute.

Haaland stated, "We have a catastrophe waiting to happen. If this bill passes, some of our most vulnerable people will have to travel hundreds of miles further to get to a hospital. I mean really, where will mothers go to get proper care for their children? How will elders access competent care?"

New Mexico is among the six states most affected by these proposed cuts. The potential closures or service limitations at rural hospitals could leave many communities without essential medical services.

"I promise you, as governor, I will fight tooth and nail to make sure everyone in New Mexico has access to healthcare and hold Trump and his cronies accountable for the scams they are pulling on our families," Haaland continued. "They answer to us."

As part of her campaign across New Mexico, Haaland has received endorsements from several notable figures and organizations including former County Commissioner Larry Sanchez, Taos Community Organizer Billy Knight, former Mora County Commissioner Paula Garcia, former State Auditor Brian Colón, Albuquerque City Councilor Joaquin Baca, Las Cruces City Councilor Becky Corran, former State Senator Siah Correra Hemphill, former Valencia County Democratic Party Chair Pam Cordova, and Common Defense.
