New Mexico celebrates half-century milestone of child support program

New Mexico is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Child Support Program. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued a proclamation on June 16 to mark the occasion. The program, which was established on June 16, 1975, collected $119.2 million for families last year and currently manages about 45,000 active cases across the state.

Governor Lujan Grisham emphasized the importance of the program: "The New Mexico Child Support Services Division is an untapped resource for many parents who are raising children in separate households and need help navigating an often-complicated court process." She encouraged those in need to contact the child support staff for assistance.

To commemorate the anniversary, open houses are being held at each of the 15 Child Support Services Division locations throughout New Mexico. These events feature information booths and a school supply drive to support local children. Betina Gonzales McCracken, Child Support Director, expressed enthusiasm for engaging with potential new clients: "We would love to spend this anniversary day talking with potential new customers who can learn about all of the services we provide."

A public celebration is scheduled for August 16 at Tiguex Park in Albuquerque from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This free event will include music, speakers, food vendors, and distribution of school supplies collected at CSSD field offices.

The outreach efforts have led to a significant increase in newly opened child support cases by 230% through May. For more information about existing cases or the child support program, individuals can visit YES.NM.GOV or call the HCA Consolidated Customer Service Center at 1-800-283-4465.
