The New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission (NMISC) has introduced a new tool aimed at enhancing water planning across the state. The Regional Water Planning Mapping Tool is an interactive resource that presents key water data in a visual and user-friendly format. This tool integrates various trusted datasets to support informed decision-making regarding water resources.
The NMISC encourages public exploration of this tool, which can be accessed at storymap.mainstreamnm.org. Developed in collaboration with RS21, the mapping tool incorporates Census population data, datasets from the New Mexico Water Data Act, and Water Use by Categories reports from 2015 and 2020, among other sources.
This approach allows users to explore water availability, usage, and trends throughout New Mexico in an engaging manner. "When we’re thinking about water planning, it is really important to understand who is using water and where it is being used," said Sara Fox, Senior Water Planner at NMISC. The tool visualizes interactions between populations and water use, providing insights into groundwater and surface water dynamics across regions.
Users can access information relevant to their neighborhoods through this map. For instance, a farmer in Chama can locate their farm and view related water information. Additional details and newsletter sign-up are available at MainStreamNM.org.
