In Santa Fe, New Mexico, hundreds of residents have expressed their gratitude to the state's congressional delegation for their efforts in defending public lands. This support was demonstrated through a letter signed by a diverse group including educators, retired professionals, artists, medical professionals, faith leaders, and environmental organizations. The letter was sent in response to perceived threats from the Trump administration and its allies concerning public land protections.
The delivery of the letter followed the June 7 Defend National Monuments Day of Action. This event is part of a larger movement opposing potential reductions or privatization of national monuments by the Trump administration. A report from The Washington Post in April indicated that six national monuments are being considered for such actions, including Organ Mountains–Desert Peaks in New Mexico.
Patrick Nolan, Executive Director of Friends of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks, stated: “New Mexicans have been clear in their opposition to efforts to dismantle our public lands system. These places are more than a number on a spreadsheet or locations on a map.” He emphasized the community's connection to these lands and praised the federal delegation for their conservation efforts.
Recently, House congressional Republicans narrowly passed a budget reconciliation bill containing provisions that could affect clean energy incentives and propose opening public lands for oil and gas leasing. The bill also suggests introducing systems that expedite environmental reviews without judicial oversight.
The letter addressed strong opposition to proposals threatening national monuments with private exploitation. It reflects concerns about rolling back environmental safeguards and clean energy investments.
Miya King-Flaherty from the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter remarked: “Our congressional delegation is standing up for our cherished public lands, and New Mexicans are grateful.” She highlighted the importance of keeping public lands accessible to all while rejecting policies favoring corporate interests over environmental well-being.
