New Mexico National Guard provides resiliency resources to soldiers

Soldiers of the 642nd Support Maintenance Company in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, attended a resiliency briefing during their Annual Training. The session was led by Lt. Col. James Chavez, the New Mexico National Guard’s Joint Resiliency Director (J-9), who highlighted the resources available to soldiers for issues such as job finding and resume writing.

Josie Jahnke, the State Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, emphasized accessibility to support services: "If you have a problem, come see us. We get paid to help you." She assured that any staff member would connect soldiers with the appropriate assistance if needed.

Sarah Fischer detailed the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) and Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) programs. Orvie Baker Jr., SHARP Coordinator for the 93rd Troop Command, shared his perspective as a retired noncommissioned officer: "I believe that if you have Soldiers, you take care of them."

Capt. Michelle McDaniel discussed her role as a Behavioral Health Officer, focusing on solutions over discharges: "We do not seek to put people out." Sgt. 1st Class Jaime Carrillo-Madrid reassured soldiers about the availability of help at any time: "You can call me at three in the morning."

Misty Sandoval addressed risk reduction and acknowledged human emotions: "You guys are human. You’re going to feel emotion." Joaquin Cordova stressed open communication for suicide prevention: "Be honest so we can help you."

Rhonda Hernandez talked about Integrated Primary Prevention for violence with a holistic approach: "I am here to support you." Jose Sanchez offered financial planning assistance.

Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Carper concluded by expressing gratitude to J-9 and outlining four Lines of Effort set by Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, emphasizing readiness for federal missions, state support like Operation Zia Shield, community building, and adapting training methods.

Carper reminded soldiers of their importance: "We need each and every one of you."
