New Mexico offers updated property tax exemptions for veterans

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS) is currently accepting applications from veterans for new property tax exemptions. These exemptions were signed into law on March 20, 2025. The standard veteran property tax exemption is now set at $10,000 and will be applied to the veteran or unmarried surviving spouse's 2025 notice of value. From 2026 onwards, this amount will be adjusted for inflation.

For the tax year 2026, a Disabled Veterans Exemption allows veterans or their unmarried surviving spouses to apply for an adjusted exemption. This exemption amount corresponds to the percentage of the veteran's disability as determined by federal law. To benefit from the new Disabled Veteran tax exemption, veterans must submit an application to NMDVS and file it with their County Assessor.

These exemptions aim to provide financial relief to veterans in recognition of their service and sacrifice. NMDVS has organized events across the state to explain these changes. Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) will be present at these events to assist veterans and their eligible dependents with filing VA claims and obtaining federal and state benefits.

Scheduled events include:

- Taos: June 20 at Taos County Assessors Office

- Carlsbad: July 1 at San Jose Senior Center

- Gallup: July 18 at Gallup Sports Complex

To verify eligibility, applicants need documents such as a copy of DD-214 or equivalent forms, a VA Award Letter showing disability percentage, and identification documents like a NM Driver’s License or ID.

For inquiries about the new property tax law, contact NMDVS at 505-827-6300 or 505-383-2400. Forms are available at nmdvs.org.

Additionally, VSOs help connect veterans with community resources like transitional housing and healthcare services. Information on federal and state benefits is accessible through field offices. The NMDVS Healthcare Division collaborates with mental health providers statewide to support veterans in crisis. For immediate assistance, call or text 988 and press 1 for the Veterans crisis line.
