Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller recently guided University of New Mexico (UNM) deans through Downtown Albuquerque to discuss the potential expansion of the university into the area. This initiative aims to enhance academic programs and offer students practical learning experiences, while simultaneously invigorating Downtown with increased activity and investment.
Mayor Keller emphasized the significance of this move, describing it as "a hopeful step forward for UNM and Albuquerque." The local Chamber has expressed support for the project, recognizing its potential to rejuvenate Downtown on multiple fronts.
In February, a memorandum of understanding was signed by Mayor Keller and UNM President Garnett S. Stokes. This agreement established a collaborative effort between the city and university to assess possible locations, explore academic program opportunities, and evaluate the feasibility of expanding into Downtown.
President Stokes remarked in February that "by exploring how to expand UNM’s footprint into Downtown Albuquerque, we’re reimagining how a modern urban university can serve its community." She highlighted that such an expansion would place students at the heart of business innovation, cultural activities, and civic life, offering unique opportunities for experiential learning and career development while contributing to Downtown's revitalization.
Drawing parallels with Arizona State University's impact on downtown Phoenix, Mayor Keller expressed his administration's readiness to assist UNM in achieving similar success in Albuquerque. The agreement outlines that UNM will assess academic program needs, infrastructure requirements, and community impact while involving faculty, students, and community stakeholders in the process.
