The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and the New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) will offer free domestic well water testing in Taos on June 14, 2025. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Taos Farmer’s Market, located at 105 Albright St, Taos, NM. Testing is free for the first 100 participants or while supplies last, with each test typically costing about $150.
Participants must bring their own water samples for testing. Results will be mailed within two to three weeks after the event. "Private well owners in Taos County can come to this water fair and find out more about the quality of their household drinking water," said Ground Water Quality Bureau Chief Justin Ball. "When we know what's in our well water, we can take action. Free testing helps our communities stay informed and healthy."
Residents should follow specific guidelines when collecting samples: let the water run for two to three minutes before collection, use a clean container without odors, and collect water at the well head if possible. Samples should be collected close to the time of testing.
Participants are also asked to provide basic information about their wells, such as depth and casing material. If unable to attend, residents may send a sample with someone else provided it is clearly labeled with necessary details.
The state's "water fairs" allow private well owners to measure pH levels, specific conductance, and nitrates—key indicators of safe drinking water. High nitrate levels can pose risks to pregnant women and infants.
While NMED educates private well owners through these fairs, it does not regulate private wells. Since July 1, 2024, NMED has tested 111 private wells across five fairs, offering $25,500 in value to New Mexico communities as part of its goal to invest $65 million statewide in fiscal year 2025.
