Attorney General Raúl Torrez, along with a coalition of 25 attorneys general and two state governors, has achieved a significant legal victory against the Trump administration's efforts to dismantle AmeriCorps. The U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland granted a preliminary injunction to halt the closure of AmeriCorps programs and workforce reductions.
"This is a major victory for New Mexico and the thousands of AmeriCorps members who serve our communities every day," said Attorney General Raúl Torrez. He emphasized the importance of these programs in areas such as wildfire recovery, education, and housing assistance.
U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich also praised the decision, saying, "Thanks to Attorney General Raúl Torrez’s leadership, we’ve stopped Donald Trump’s illegal attacks on AmeriCorps." He urged compliance with the injunction to restore essential programs and funding.
The court order reinstates over 750 National Civilian Community Corps members and restores terminated programs in plaintiff states while litigation continues. The lawsuit filed in April argued that the Trump administration's actions were unlawful due to lack of required notice and opportunity for public comment.
Joining New Mexico in this legal action are attorneys general from various states including Arizona, California, and New York, as well as governors from Kentucky and Pennsylvania.
