Deb Haaland, a candidate for New Mexico governor, engaged with veterans groups in Santa Fe to address their concerns about the future of the state. At a press conference, she highlighted the challenges faced by New Mexico's veterans due to cuts in services and staff at the Department of Veterans Affairs under the Trump Administration.

Haaland emphasized her commitment to strengthening the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services and addressing gaps left by funding reductions. She plans to create programs recognizing veterans' skills in the civilian workforce and target businesses that exploit veterans.

Jose Vasquez, U.S. Army Veteran and Executive Director of Common Defense, announced his organization's endorsement of Haaland during the event. Haaland also introduced "Vets for Deb," an affinity group supporting her campaign.

“Veterans know something in their core: real strength comes from standing together. Service means sacrifice,” said Deb Haaland. “And freedom requires constant vigilance and action, and I will always work to ensure our veterans receive the benefits they deserve.”

Common Defense, a grassroots organization of progressive veterans, supports Haaland's campaign as it continues to gain momentum. Vets for Deb aims to reach voters affected by current federal policies.

“Veterans know what real leadership looks like, and Deb Haaland is a real leader who has never backed down from a fight that matters," stated Jose Vasquez. "Our members are proud to stand with her because she’s one of us—someone who prioritizes people over politics."

The Trump Administration's termination of 2,400 VA employees, with more expected, threatens services vital to New Mexico's 122,000+ veterans. Cuts could also impact Medicaid and SNAP benefits relied upon by millions of veterans.

Josh Jones from Vets for Deb expressed trust in Haaland's ability to advocate for veteran needs based on her track record.

In addition to Common Defense, Haaland has received endorsements from various local officials and organizations such as Conservation Voters New Mexico Action Fund and EMILYs List.
