After 25 years of service in state government, Diana Barela has decided to retire. Her decision aligns with her desire to spend more time with her first grandchild, Kailani. Barela has been working as a management analyst for the Transportation Services Department and as an executive assistant for the General Services Department (GSD) cabinet secretary for the past two years.

Barela's career in state government includes roles across three executive branch agencies. She began at the Public Education Department as a Secretary 1 in May 2000. Later, she worked as an exempt executive assistant for Economic Development's cabinet secretary, Rick Homans. She then joined GSD under Secretary Art Jaramillo as a front office receptionist before moving to the Transportation Services Division.

In her role at the Transportation Services Division, Barela managed responsibilities such as overseeing state employee drivers' speeding, GPS tracking, and license suspensions. She also handled vehicle abuse and commuting reports for state vehicles and managed office supplies and records.

Anna Silva, Acting Cabinet Secretary of GSD, expressed appreciation for Barela's contributions: "As Diana prepares to retire, we reflect with deep appreciation on the invaluable dual role she has played at GSD," said Silva. "Her experience, institutional knowledge, and unwavering dedication have been a steady force behind the scenes - guiding, supporting, and ensuring our work ran smoothly every single day."

Barela looks forward to spending time with Kailani and plans activities such as visiting Disneyland and engaging in hobbies like sewing and crafting. She also intends to take cooking classes and volunteer at a state daycare.

Barela fondly recalls coaching the Santa Fe High bowling team with her husband Chris, leading them to a state championship. Chris is also nearing retirement after serving 22 years as bureau chief for Surplus Property.

Reflecting on her career highlights, Barela mentioned working on Spaceport projects during her time at Economic Development: "I had the opportunity to attend an event in Las Cruces where the Spaceport and Virgin Atlantic people attended," she said.

With family ties deeply rooted in state service—her father retired from Economic Development—Barela's legacy continues through her daughters Stephanie and Antonia who work within various state departments.
