After 25 years of service in state government, Diana Barela has decided to retire. Her decision coincides with the birth of her first grandchild, Kailani, allowing her more time for family. For the past two years, Barela has served as a management analyst for the Transportation Services Department and as an executive assistant for the General Services Department (GSD) cabinet secretary.

Barela's career in state government spans over three executive branch agencies. She began her journey with the Public Education Department in May 2000 as a Secretary 1. Later, she worked as an exempt executive assistant for Economic Development's cabinet secretary, Rick Homans. Eventually, she joined GSD to work under Secretary Art Jaramillo and his deputies before moving to the Transportation Services Division.

In her role at the Transportation Services Division, Barela managed responsibilities such as handling speeding issues, GPS tracking, and drivers' license suspensions for state employees. She also oversaw vehicle abuse reports and commuting reports for state vehicles. Additionally, she took care of office supplies and records management.

Anna Silva, Acting Cabinet Secretary of GSD, expressed gratitude for Barela's contributions: "As Diana prepares to retire, we reflect with deep appreciation on the invaluable dual role she has played at GSD... Her presence will be greatly missed."

Barela looks forward to spending time with Kailani and plans a family trip to Disneyland. She also intends to pursue hobbies like sewing and cooking while volunteering at a state daycare.

Reflecting on her career highlights, Barela recalls working on Spaceport-related projects during her time at Economic Development: "I had the opportunity to attend an event in Las Cruces where the Spaceport and Virgin Atlantic people attended... I learned lots about the Spaceport as it was coming online."

Her husband Chris is also nearing retirement after 22 years with Surplus Property. The couple enjoys bowling competitively once a week.

Barela will miss her colleagues at GSD but is excited about this new chapter in life.
