Books by Mail, a service of the New Mexico State Library, marks its 50th anniversary. This program delivers library materials directly to New Mexicans who are unable to access a public library or Bookmobile stop due to distance, physical disability, or visual impairment.

State Librarian Eli Guinnee expressed pride in the program's long-standing commitment: "We are so proud that for 50 years Books by Mail has been a vital part of our commitment to ensuring library services for every New Mexican."

The collection includes over 30,000 books in standard and large print formats and a digital selection available through the Hoopla app. The service began as a pilot project in 1968 after patrons living far from libraries showed interest in receiving books by mail.

Initially, the New Mexico State Library collaborated with the US Postal Service to send catalogs and books from the Bookmobile headquarters. The program is now centralized in Santa Fe and operates alongside three Bookmobiles and a Delivery Service.

A patron shared their gratitude: "Books by Mail has allowed me to continue reading and learning via large print and audio books... Without this service, my quality of life would be substantially and adversely impacted."

Berdina Nieto, Books by Mail Specialist, enjoys connecting with patrons: "As I prepare books for people, I get a brief glimpse of their everyday lives... When the books are returned, they return with something of the person who had them."

Eligible residents can register for Books by Mail via mail, email, or phone. More information is available at https://nmstatelibrary.org/user-resources/bbm/.
