Deb Haaland, a candidate for New Mexico governor, recently visited Land Grant communities in the East Mountains to discuss the protection of land rights, water, and cultural traditions. The meeting took place amidst concerns about potential threats to rural infrastructure funding under the Trump Administration's reconciliation package.
Haaland emphasized her commitment to safeguarding these vital resources. "New Mexico is full of beautiful traditions and communities who care deeply about the future we’re leaving for generations to come," she stated. She criticized President Trump's actions as undoing protections for lands and waters, affecting jobs and essential programs. Haaland pledged her support to stand with communities if elected governor.
Her visit was part of a broader campaign effort that includes a 19-stop tour across New Mexico, drawing significant attendance even in counties with strong support for Donald Trump. Her campaign has garnered endorsements from notable figures such as Senator Ben Ray Luján and Representatives Teresa Leger Fernandez, Melanie Stansbury, Gabe Vasquez, along with over 80 local leaders and organizations.
Land Grant leaders expressed gratitude for Haaland's engagement. Juan Sanchez of Chilili Land Grant appreciated her willingness to listen to community concerns. JJ Herrera from Cañon de Carnué Land Grant highlighted Haaland's focus on their issues. Andrea Padilla of Tomé Land Grant praised her understanding of land grant communities' needs.
Moises Gonzales from Cañon de Carnué Land Grant noted the importance of discussing critical issues with Haaland. Arturo Archuleta emphasized her respect for local leaders' connections to their land and water resources.
Haaland has a history of supporting rural communities through her leadership at the Department of the Interior. She backed legislation aimed at improving consultation between federal agencies and New Mexico’s land grant communities and oversaw significant investments in rural water infrastructure projects.
