The New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD) has announced that April is designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month. The department is emphasizing programs and resources aimed at enhancing child and youth safety across the state. This announcement was made in a press release on April 3, 2025.
According to the press release, the Family Services Division (FSD) of New Mexico's CYFD operates initiatives focused on preventing child maltreatment and promoting family well-being through early support. The division's community-based prevention, intervention, and reunification initiative connects families to parenting resources and case management tailored to individual family needs identified during structured assessments. The Family Outreach program adopts a strengths-based, family-led approach by linking families to community partners who assist in accessing necessary services. This program welcomes both agency and self-referrals.
Family Resource Centers throughout the state act as centralized locations where families can receive assistance navigating local services, including educational support, public assistance, and wellness resources. The Keeping Families Together program addresses housing instability by helping eligible families secure permanent housing while providing intensive case management; it currently operates in Bernalillo and Chaves counties. In observance of Child Abuse Prevention Month, events and awareness activities are taking place statewide throughout April to highlight available family support systems.
"CYFD’s Family Services Division focuses on supporting families to prevent abuse and neglect," said CYFD Secretary Teresa Casados in a press release. "Through family-centered programs and partnerships with service providers, CYFD aims to give families the tools and supports they need so they don’t fall into crisis."
The New Mexico Children, Youth & Families Department works towards supporting children, youth, and families by focusing on their resilience and involvement in systems affecting their lives. According to the CYFD website, the department envisions a New Mexico where all children, youth, and families are healthy, safe, thriving, and connected to their culture and community. CYFD’s mission includes nurturing family strength, building partnerships with communities, and addressing disparities.
