Higher Education Secretary Stephanie M. Rodriguez has encouraged public colleges and universities in New Mexico not to increase tuition for the upcoming semester. In her statement, Rodriguez emphasized the importance of maintaining access and affordability to enhance educational opportunities for residents.

"Access and affordability remain key components of our mission in New Mexico to enhance the educational opportunities of more and more residents each year," Rodriguez stated. She expressed concern over some institutions opting to raise tuition and fees and urged others to avoid burdening students and the state with added costs.

Rodriguez acknowledged the financial challenges faced by colleges and universities related to resource allocation and investment priorities. However, she emphasized that students should not face additional financial pressure, especially when alternative funding options might be available.

"Due to New Mexico's record investments in higher education under this administration — including the Higher Education Trust Fund — we have worked hand in hand with the Legislature to increase available resources dedicated to operational funding and capital projects for colleges and universities across the board," she explained.

Rodriguez reiterated her commitment to achieving tuition-free education in the state, considering it a guiding principle. "Tuition-free education in this state remains our North Star, and New Mexicans should never feel there is any impediment to a high-quality higher education experience in our state," she concluded.
