The New Mexico legislature has passed Senate Bill 83, known as the Innovation in State Government Fund, which now awaits the governor's approval. Sponsored by Senate Pro Tem Mimi Stewart and Senator Heather Berghmans, this bill aims to foster job creation and economic diversification in New Mexico.

Representative Kristina Ortez, who co-sponsored SB83 and presented it on the House floor, stated: “The Innovation in State Government Fund will give our state agencies the ability to develop innovative solutions to achieve net-zero emissions and transition to a clean energy economy in New Mexico.” She emphasized the need for proactive measures against climate change impacts such as fires, droughts, and rising temperatures.

Senate Bill 83 works alongside another legislative measure, Senate Bill 48 or the Community Benefit Fund. While SB48 focuses on directing investments towards communities affected by climate change through clean energy initiatives and job creation, SB83 provides resources for state agencies to implement policies that promote economic growth and resilience.

Jessica Pace from Western Leaders Network commented on the significance of SB83: “Local elected officials want a clean energy future and good-paying jobs for their communities and constituents.” The fund allocates $13.5 million for state agencies to enforce innovative climate solutions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Clear Horizons New Mexico Coalition supports these efforts. This coalition comprises various organizations advocating for climate action across New Mexico. Their collective goal is to ensure sustainable development while preserving the state's natural beauty.
