ABQ Reads, a program focused on enhancing literacy skills among kindergarten and first-grade students, is continuing its efforts by distributing at least two books monthly to participating classrooms through April. This initiative includes a special celebration of Dr. Seuss's impact on young readers.
On March 4, ABQ Reads tutors engaged with students from Atrisco, Bel-Air, and Whittier elementary schools in Albuquerque during the annual Dr. Seuss celebration. The Chamber provided three Dr. Seuss books—“The Tooth Book,” “The Eye Book,” and “There’s a Wocket in my Pocket”—to 200 students as part of this event.
Dr. Seuss Day, observed on March 2, marks the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. During the 1990s, the National Education Association proposed a day dedicated to reading across the United States, which led to the creation of Read Across America in 1998 on Dr. Seuss's birthday.
ABQ Reads dedicates an entire month to celebrating this occasion as it aligns with their mission to improve literacy skills for young learners.
The program is actively seeking tutors for the upcoming school year in fall. Additional details are available at abqreads.com.
