New Mexico is currently considering House Bill 77, which seeks to enhance access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for eligible residents. The bill is expected to be debated on the House Floor today, February 21, 2025. Advocates are calling on citizens to contact their representatives in support of the legislation.

The state faces significant challenges with food insecurity, ranking among the highest in the nation. Many New Mexicans who qualify for SNAP benefits remain unenrolled due to difficulties in navigating the application process. This issue is particularly prevalent among older adults.

House Bill 77 proposes that the Health Care Authority submit an annual outreach plan aimed at improving SNAP access. The plan would enable nonprofits, such as food banks, to apply for matching federal funds to support enrollment initiatives. This measure intends to boost SNAP participation rates, especially in rural communities and among older populations, while also alleviating administrative pressures on state resources.

The bill has received backing from the New Mexico Legislative Health and Human Services Committee. Supporters believe it will leverage federal funding effectively and address food insecurity issues within the state.

Shanae Satriana from the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty encourages individuals to share personal experiences related to community-based enrollment efforts or express support using statements like: “I urge Representatives to support HB 77, which will leverage federal funding to address the high rates of food insecurity in New Mexico. Community based enrollment is a proven strategy to increase access to federal food assistance while reducing state administrative burdens.”
